Gem Fair

To day was the Gem Fair. It comes to SLC about every three months at the South Town Expo Center. Going in is like going into the cave of wonders. You it's excitingly overwhelming at first and by the time you leave you can't wait to get out of there. The prices are so good and the selection so wide that restraint is difficult and I always over spend my budget. It is fun when you get home though spreading out all the pretty, shinny tings that you bought (mixed in with a bit of chagrin that there are so many pretty new things, and a good dash of justification because of how good the prices were.)

New twist to desparation hairdo

In trying to do something slightly different with my hair now and then here was a dressed up desperation hair-do. Extra high (highest I've ever done, this is opening new vistas for me) messy bun with a scarf. My mom and I were talking about scarfs and saying we should start wearing them, so I have acquired a couple to experiment with. I feel I should mention that while messy buns are often a desperation hair do they usually look good and if you hair is actually not in a desperation state even better. I haven't done anything with my hair since I started volunteering on a film. I am so sick of wearing my hair in a ponytail (which coming from me is significant). It's at that point where it needs to be cut to look good down and straight and I haven't had any time to get it cut.

Canyonlands Run

I went with some girls from work to Moab this weekend for a race. They both did the half-marathon (13.1 miles) and I did the 5-mile run. I haven't been working out much at all lately, and I could tell the last 2 miles were definitely a stretch, but I did the 5 miles in 59.2 minutes, which was a lot faster than I thought I'd be, so that was nice. It was mostly down hill, which was really nice and also whenever I was tired of running all I had to do was look up and be amazed about how beautiful it was (it was a gorgeous day too). There is just something special about that red-rock country that gets me every time.

Thrift Shopping Does Terrible Things To You

I went to a wedding reception with my Mom tonight. I was very excited about wearing one of my latest finds. I went to the DI last week and blew more than I was supposed to on skirts (as ever, skirts was the last thing I intended to buy when I walked in).

...so if I had seen this skirt a couple of years ago, or even a year ago I would have probably showed it to any chance shopping companion and noted how ugly it was. Now I instantly seized on it and being different, fun, and a bit whimsical. I thought I should buy it and give it to my sister because it would look cute with her cowboy boots.

I tried said skirt on to see if it would fit my sister and almost instantly decided that I liked it too much to give it to her. The western look is not something I wear much, but I fell for this skirt like a ton of bricks (note the single ruffle down the front).

Better and better my navy shoes went perfectly with it. I couldn't resist these at the vintage store about a year ago, they are rockin' and went perfectly with this navy velvet dress I was wearing to a costume party. They turned out to be a mistake as they didn't quite fit. I always try to remind myself never to buys shoes if they don't fit because no matter how cute they are they hardly ever get worn if wearing them entails significant levels of pain. As it's been a while since their rather painful debut, I've been thinking if I break them to my foot a bit they'll be good as long as I don't wear them to events where I have to walk far or stand for long. Modern shoes do tend to have more amenities such as padding... I've been suspicious about navy previously in my life, it always seemed to be an old woman's color. (If you have ever read Vicky Bliss novels I always cringe when she goes out for the night and the drop-dead hot outfit all the men are panting over is a navy blue pants-suit. I adore Elizabeth Peters books, but even the one came out in 2000-whatever had the infamous navy pants-suit.) Having said that I am developing an excellent relationship with navy. The awesome dress I wore to my sister's wedding was navy and if only these shoes were a tad more comfortable they would look great with so many items in my wardrobe. They did quite respectably on their outing tonight, so hopefully there is a more eventful future in store for them.

Hair

So at Christmas I talked with my cousin and she was telling me how she did a 30 hairstyles in 30 days challenge. It inspired me. I decided to do a modified 25 different hairstyles in 30 days. I failed miserably. I think I lasted a week. Since then I have tried to change my hair up a bit more. These are the pictures I took in January (I was in a hat mood that week) and one from this week.

I would like it noted that the first one was in the car at 6am on the way to work, so i get bonus points for doing my hair at all.
