State Snoopers - Kaysville Adventure

We are now on a mission to discover near and far things in our state (and other nearby regions) Snooping the State for good scenery, cute shops, ancestral cemeteries, restaurants, events, and locations. Today we went to Kaysville, UT. We sent to some cute shops (I got a cute shirt 50% off wahoo) and to a good bakery for lunch.

Remember all those "Downtown Rising" ads? Well we took my Grandpa downtown to sign some papers today and we went up to my Dad's office, where we had a great view of the almost-done City Creek development, and some other good views.

I was cleaning, but I've been hankering to have a good solid jewelry session so I indulged myself and made earrings. Overall I'm very pleased with the results. I still have a good amount left over from my boutique sell, but I need to beef things up before my next sale at the JCC's farmer's market. I can I say I LOVE my new camera!!!

I was at an antique store in Ogden a couple of months ago, they had fun things, but everything was a bit over priced, so I wasn't going to buy anything, but I saw this and had to have it. It's a 1950's telephone table, but will make an awesome magazine rack or something. I'm in the middle of rearranging, so this isn't its permanent home or contents, but they look pretty cute for the present. I love how it's little legs just look like all those space ships cartoons from the 50's.

Another think I've been looking at in my last couple antiquing adventures is postcards. I bought several today, but this is my favorite. I think we tend to think of certain periods of history as much more uh..discreet..civilized (I can't find the word I want). I think I'm conscious of this, but I jolted with shock when I came across several postcards with dirty jokes on them. Human nature is in large part continuous.

Anyway, this postcard was mailed in 1917 from Houston, Texas.

I indulged myself and went antiquing today. I always look at the vintage earrings for jewelry supplies, but over the past year or so I've gathered a little collection of clip-on earrings that are just fun and are too much fun to re-purpose.This can mean that they're simply rad, or ugly in a this-would-be-good-for-costume-jewelry way, or both. Two pairs I inherited from relatives, one from my great-grandma and the other from her sister, I believe. The rest I bought. Most of them aren't very high quality or anything, but they sure are fun! The box was my Grandpa's.

I have a really good feeling about 2012. I feel that I am at the start of my new life and and a new me. In Phase I of my new life I am getting organized and trying to bulk-down on stuff. So far I have been going through all my papers (and getting rid of a lot). There's still a bit more sorting to be done, but I successfully met my goal of going from two two-drawer file boxes to one. Part of the paper project was going through all my magazine clippings and the magazines I've been hanging onto to clip and putting them in binders with sheet protectors (that was definitely the fun part of the paper project).

Today I worked on re-organizing the craft room that has been developing in Whitney's old room. I moved things in, out and around. Set the furniture up one way and decided it didn't work and then moved it again (and depending on the piece of furniture moved it a 3rd time). I guess my boot camp class is starting to work, while I'm still not great at moving furniture I moved a twin bed, 4' bookcase, night stand, 2 dressers, lots of drawers, 2 tables, and assorted other bits and bobs. I set a couple things aside for us to think about giving away and and moved the sewing machine in from the family room.

It's still rather untidy, so I'm going to wait to post a picture of the whole room when it's closer to being done (well, somewhat done, it is going to be an evolving project). But here is a picture of the one fun decorative thing I accomplished that was not simply moving heavy objects about. We're trying to mostly use things we already have and I was really happy to find a practical use for some of our cute things. After I brought the sewing machine in I cleared a space in the bookcase and grabbed an adorable old soda crate my Mom bought a couple of years ago, all the thread we own (new and old), and one of my glassware dishes, and set it up behind the sewing machine. I'm pretty tickled with it. We realized we probably should get more thread. Apparently we really like blue.

Wow, today was so discouraging, frustrating, and hard to get through for some reason. Maybe it was due to the end of the holidays. I was really tired and disoriented; fatigue often seems to lend itself to discouragement, maybe that was it. Whatever it was I hope it doesn't come back tomorrow. With the ways my weeks are currently it's always a relief when Tuesday comes to a close. I am particularly happy today to leave Tuesday behind and move on to the rest of the week.

As I mentioned earlier, I lost the charger to my camera battery (knew it was somewhere, couldn't find it) which kinda cramped my blogging style. I'd been wanting to get a new camera, so I figured Christmas was a good opportunity to ask for one. I am now a proud new owner of a new camera! I also found my charger for the battery to my old camera 3 days after Christmas (of course). I am way happy to have a nice camera and a beat up camera that I don't have to worry about as much. I had a lovely Christmas with a lot of fun time with my family. They are the best! I got lots of great things, but here is a picture of one of them. My Mom knitted us girls each a pair of gauntlets that we got in our stockings (Santa doesn't come to our house any more as we are all over 18). They are really warm and soft, and everything wonderful, including my favorite teal color. The buttons are really cute vintage metal ones, the teal is a really soft wool-something blend that can wash and is really warm, and the white is an even softer cashmere-something blend. I love them!

Well, we had 90+ mph winds last night/today here in SLC. Our house fared quite well, things blew over, but nothing other than a terra cotta pot broke. When I left at 7 to go to boot camp someone else's lawn chair had blown into our back yard (it was gone when I cam back, we think they came and got it). However when I went up the street I saw a bigger casualty. Too bad. At least a tree didn't fall on their house or anything. There were bigger damages/overturned semis due to the storm, but this was the worst I saw in our neighborhood.

So, my camera battery has run out of charge and the charger has been AWOL for about 4 weeks now...I keep expecting it to turn up, I know it's somewhere, but it hasn't yet. Anyway, it's really been cramping my blogging style. I got desperate today and put my memory card in my mom's camera.

If you haven't heard yet, I got accepted to sell jewelry at a neighborhood holiday boutique in December. I am over the moon, I'm so happy about it. It's something that's been years in the developing. I'm really excited to see how it goes. So for the next couple of weeks I need to kick the creating into high-gear to expand my inventory. It's been so fun.

I bought this kitchen (aka craft) table at IKEA a couple months ago (when we bought the red couch). I finally assembled it this morning. It is uber, Uber cool. There is the central section with 6 drawers (3 each side) and two collapsible leaves, so I can fold them down when they are not needed, but it is all quite sturdy.
Recently I started experimenting with asymmetrical chain necklaces. I got some extra chains to experiment with. Below is a study in browns.

The Spiral Jetty was built in 1970 during a drought, so it is mostly under water right now. It was still cool to see, the next drought year we'll have to go out again so we can go and walk on it.

We passed a family on mountain bikes on the drive out, but other than that we didn't see a soul for hours and it was utterly silent except for the sounds of slight breezes or water lapping occasionally. Looking at the lake and the mist shrouding the base of the mountains in the distance made me feel like this should be the scenery in a fantasy novel. We're at the end of the jetty from the first picture. The lake behind us didn't show up, so it looks like we're at the end of the world.
This jetty is close by the spiral jetty and was used in oil explorations from the 1920's - 1980's.

Promontory Point
As anyone with good taste knows the best adventures start with Coke, Peanut butter M&Ms, and Munchie Mix, AND picnic sandwiches.
Adventure's 2nd stop was Promontory Point, cuz we were there. (Stop one may or may not be addressed in a later post.)
Real steam-engines that that work! They also came with chatty conductors that gave us cool historical facts. (We lucked out this is the last day of the year the steam engines come out of their little house until May.)

Power of the Eyebrow

Charles Le Brun was a painter for Louis XIV in the 17th century. He was in charge of the French Royal Academy of art and he dictated the style and taste of art in ways that impacted the next century or so of art. Anywho, he considered showing expressions very important and he created a handbook for artists with different facial expressions that was widely published.

This is an excerpt from an article we read for my art history classes by Linda Walsh called "Charles Le Brun 'art dictator of France'".

"Le Brun asserted (with a touching confidence) that the eyebrow is the most expressive part of the face because it best shows the 'nature of the agitation' of the soul. Plate 72 shows how the eyebrows are linked to the pineal gland situated 'in the middle of the brain' - the brain being the part of the body 'where the soul exercises its functions most immediately'. Although Le Brun conceded that eyes, mouths and noses can betray or express emotion...he felt that the eyebrow was capable of the greatest and most subtle range of positions, and thus able to express passions of all kinds."

Lol! So utterly fabulous. Gotta heart it. See the diagram for anger below, with the man himself below that. (It appears that his eyebrows, at least would be capable of considerable gyrations.) The picture at the beginning of the post is really small, but check out those sweet brows.

Some of you may know that I have a terrible acquisitive instinct. I sometimes blame it on my Clark ancestors (I need one of these, therefore I should buy 3), but I'm afraid I probably can't actually blame it on them.

Over the past year or so in my jaunts to the antique-mall and estate sales I've been collecting hankies. I have about 20 now and I just washed and ironed them all today. Still deciding on their destinies, but even if I just end up using them at church, I'm happy. I get a lot of pleasure out of looking at them. All the pretty colors make me happy. I love feeling their softness and a connection with the past.

Now that I think about it, as things go, hankies are a pretty harmless thing for me to buy, small and relatively inexpensive. :) (like I need any more justification, I'm trying really hard to move to no-buy mode since I moved to only working part-time).

Dirty Dash

Last Saturday four friends from work and I ran the Dirty Dash in Midway. It is a run/obstacle course in the mud. :) We ran the whole 10k and jumped in mud puddles, climbed over stacks of hay bales, went over and under wood barricades, through giant metal tubes, through a 1/2 mile of lake water, over a rope thing, on a rope swing, and down a slide. It was utterly fantastic. I have a cold now, but it was totally worth it. :)

There's this couch at IKEA that we've been wanting to buy for our kitchen for a long time. We have never bit the bullet, though. My Mom and I were at IKEA buying me a bookcase on Thursday and when we did our customary wander through the As-Is section right before leaving low and behold there was our couch! 40% off! With no noticeable defects! The kindly IKEA men helped us smoosh it into our CRV (who needs leg room?) and twined the back hatch down since it wouldn't close the last 6" and homeward bound we were!
There's still a bit of re-arranging to do sometime, but it's already the most popular seat in the house.

So for the past year-ish (maybe a bit less) one of the things I've been focusing on is trying to develop more of a legit hobby that maybe I can turn to some account some day, or at least enjoy and have another focus besides working. A lot of this focus has been on jewelry making. These are pictures of the significant things I've made so far, I'm looking forward to doing more soon. I've been spending time collecting things (read buying things), but I think I've got enough to shift to actually making more things.

The two silver pieces (the ones with the stones) are the most impressive/complicated. I did them in the silversmithing class I took with my mom. The other two bracelets are aluminum (high enough grade that they are ok on the skin). The rings are buttons, and re-purposed cuff link and earring. The silver stuff required a torch, but as of now I'm trying to do things that don't need a torch. Lots to learn! I'm starting with stamping.
I didn't make these, I bought them at boutiques around Christmas. I'm not planning on anything as ambitious as the birds (aren't they adorable?) but I'd like to maybe do a couple hair things just for me for fun. I'd also like to do some paper-goods stuff, but we'll see how far I get.

I want to make a necklace soon. I went through the beads/charms that I've collected over the years and pulled out a bunch I want to experiment with...just looking at all those pretty things I love makes me happy.

So the past couple days I've been thinking how badly I need a new blog post, but I haven't really taken pictures of anything too much lately, and I just didn't seem to have anything. Today however, I realized my error.

I got a new schedule at work and I have Wednesdays off. I've dubbed it Sleep-in Wednesday (and I SO relish sleeping past 5am and staying up late on Tuesday night). My mom and I usually do something together after I finally wake up. We had the loveliest day today. We went to run into Sam Weller's bookstore for 10 mins and got lost in the dollar section for 45 mins, shared a yummy sandwich and fries at Tony burger (where we got a delicious table tucked in the corner right by the window with the sun streaming in), then we went to Smith's and bought make-up and bath bubbles and chocolate, hand sanitizer, and other sundry items. It was a lovely mix of spontaneity and productiveness and just the right blend of feeling like you splurged on spending, but didn't have any buyers remorse.

So...that made me realize that what I have been doing a lot of lately is SHOPPING. And I have been enjoying it. It's all been enjoyable shopping (lots for myself, some gift hunting). So I took pictures of the thinks I've bought in the last couple weeks. ...and as there are a lot of pictures I should probably put a rein on the spending soon. :)

My Mom and I took a silversmithing class 6 or so months ago and though it discovered Harbor Freight. It is a tool store and we've been a couple times. It's fun to go wander around and see the totally random things they sell in addition to tools (wheelchairs, noise hair trimmers, knives, some kids toys, polisher complete with ground walnut shell polisher.) You just don't know when you will stumble into something unexpected. And as we are not the most tool savvy people you have ever met we have fun trying to figure out what some of the things are for. Also in general the prices are really good.

This is what I got at Harbor Freight I'm trying to get into making stamped jewelery and have been collecting tools. Find of the day here was the Tweezer set, which was only $6 ish for all of them! I'm stoked!

So a couple weekends ago we got an email about an Estate Sale. I made a firm public declaration that I was not going. Because I have a bad habit of going and buying stuff. ...but Saturday rolled around and I had realized it was in this building that we used to go look at their fountain when I was little, so of course I couldn't miss the opportunity to see inside. :)

I got a bag of random odd and ends. I got it because they had clip-on earring backs you can glue things on (refer to above jewelery comments). It also included such random items as a bunch of those metal bars that attach leather watch straps to watches and some doll house hinges.

Cigar box (wood, surprisingly only $1 I bought it to put my drill polishing ends in, but I've decided it's too cute for that and so now am still deciding it's purpose.)
Silver-plated salad tongs...I'll polish them someday. Were supposed to be $3, but he gave them to me for $1, which I thought was funny because he reduced these, but charged me full price for the bag of junk, which were both originally $3.

I didn't have anything to do the other Saturday night, so I decided to look in at Nordstrom Rack...yeah, did some damage. I did need some heels and some shoes to replace my old cute sneakers that are hashed. And though it felt like a lot to spend when I wasn't planning on buying anything that night I am totally tickled with my shoes and will admit to being ridiculously in love with those heels.

We got this new version of Emma from the Library and watched it a ton. It is really well done. I went to Costco to look for RED, but I saw Emma so I grabbed it. Definitely worth owning. I then went to Smith's and bought RED. (Which I keep watching while I clean my room. I just really have fun with a lot of parts of that movie.) Please note no prices here as movies always cost way too much unless you take the trouble to buy them online.

For one of the birthday gifts I was looking for my Mom and I seized the opportunity to go to the farming store (IFA). We also bought this seed corn so we can make some of those heat up things you put in the microwave. It made me want to go to AA Callister's or Smith and Edward's again to see if I can find a cool belt.

And last, but certainly not least....Sam Weller's. I hit the dollar rooms with a gusto. The check out guy's jaw hit the floor when he saw me coming. Almost everything I bought was solely for the cover art. I have a couple different ideas for the uses of these, but I won't expand on them here . Even if they never get used for anything it was just too fun to buy them. I delight in how awful the awful ones are. I don't know why but they just tickle my funny bones to no end. I have previously tried reading a couple of books of the type that I've bought before, but they are pretty painful, so not sure if I'll be reading any of these. But they are OH SO CLASSIC! I heart.

(We went into Sam Weller's for the 1941 Relief Society Magazines, but that's a whole different story).
(I'd like it noted this one is non-fiction.)

So, as you can see, I've been enjoying myself enormously the past couple weeks.
